.14), itsdecease was a manifest chastening from God upon David and Bathsheba."Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changedhis apparel, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped: then he cameto his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he dideat" (v.20).This is beautiful, reminding us of Job’s bowing beneath God’schastening rod and worshiping Him when he received tidings of the death of hischildren. How different was this from the disconsolate grief and rebellionagainst God which is so often displayed by worldlings when their loved ones arematched away from them.Weeping should never hinder worshiping: "Is any amongyou afflicted? let him pray" (James 5:13).How the terms of this verse rebukethe personal untidiness of some who attend public worship!"And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay withher: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord lovedhim" (v.24).Having meekly bowed before God’s rod, humbled himself beneath Hismighty hand, and publicly owned Him in worship, David now received a token ofGod’s favor: "Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest;and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shallbe Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days" (1Chron.22:9).The birth and name given to Solomon was an evidence that God wasreconciled to David, as it was also an earnest of the tranquility which wouldobtain in Israel during his reign.Solomon was also named "Jedidiah" whichsignifies "beloved of the Lord"—signal demonstration of the sovereignty ofdivine grace! The chapter closes (vv.26-31) with a brief account of Israel’s capture ofRabbah, the royal city of the Ammonites.Further proof was this of God’s graceunto David: he prospered his arms notwithstanding his aggravated sins.Theadditional chastisements which came upon him under the governmental dealings ofGod will be considered by us in the chapters which follow
